Cigar Review – RoMa Craft CroMagnon Mandible
Cro-Magnon man is regarded as the prototype of modern Homo sapiens in Europe. At the time of the discoveries of fossilized remains of pre-historic man, the church still had great autocratic influence over such discoveries-it was heresy to talk about man pre-Adam. Anthropologists who made these incremental discoveries were weary of what they announced they’d discovered. Bits and pieces of bone fragments, tools, and even jewellery were discovered, but nothing that incontrovertibly could prove that a version of man existed pre-Adam.
These discoveries were 200 years before Darwin’s theory of evolution was formulated. Darwin hadn’t even been born! So it was only when the anthropologist, Boucher de Perthes found a fully intact lower jaw of a man – the MANDIBLE- that he sent it to the Academy of Science to support the theory that a version of man existed beyond our current form. The discovery was declared to be genuine and of significant importance. And then doubt set in. From all corners of the globe, scientists began calling the discovery a fake, supporting the Church’s stance. De Perthes had lost credibility, but he held steadfast to the truth of his discovery. It was only 5 years after his death, that he was vindicated, when the MANDIBLE was declared at his memorial as being “one of the finest jewels in the crown of such anthropological discoveries”.
Tonight I’m smoking the finest jewel in the crown of RoMa Craft Tobac, the CROMAGNON MANDIBLE.

Given the history of the mandible, it is significant that RoMa Craft Tobac used an African Cameroon binder. Our species evolved about 200,000 years ago in Africa, and the discovery of the Cromagnon Man Mandible proved that ALL homo sapiens have African roots as their common heritage.
FLAVOUR NOTES AND IMPRESSIONS
Once removed from the cellophane wrapping, the Cromagnon Mandible presents as frim to the touch with no soft spots. The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper looks chocolate, and when I smell it, there it I get a hint of cocoa and earthy moss. The wrapper itself has the right amount of oiliness, so I’m anticipating lots of flavour when I light up.
I punch through the triple cap, and the dry draw is distinctly roasted coffee beans, cocoa nibs and a bit like almost-ripe apricots. The cigar is very comfortable in my hand, evenly balanced. The draw is not tight at all, despite the cigars firmness. It’s not loose either, just the way I like it.
On light up, all my hopes are realized. FLAVOUR FLAVOUR FLAVOUR.
Cocoa and an aniseedy liquoriceness predominate with intermittent bursts of espresso. Peppery on the retrohale, which isn’t clawing or astringent at all. Just as I got to the point to taking of the band, I got that sudden cigar-headiness rush. Smack between the eyes. It wasn’t unpleasant at all, just unexpected. Because you until that point, the Mandible was a solid medium. And then WHAM! FULL ON. I so very loved every moment of it. I even nubbed it with my Cigar Dagger. Managed by slowing down my pace, but so so enjoyable.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Cromagnon Mandible is a fantastic cigar. With full bodied smoke and big flavours of cocoa, coffee, liquorice and earth, it’s just about as close as you can get to a perfect cigar following a big meaty meal. Beautiful smoke production, with a full yet clean feeling on the palate. Quite gentle on the retrohale. These flavours don’t need to be thought about, they really are patently predominant. Beautifully constructed, the ash was a solid marbled grey, and only fell off when I was taking off the band.
WARNING: NOT FOR THE UNINITIATED!!
The Cromagnon Mandible is a powerful beast that sneaks up on you. You’ll need to pace yourself if you want to make it to the nub. And trust me, the flavour profile will make you want to. So make sure you’ve set aside about 2½ hours of peaceful, uninterrupted me-time, and embrace this jewel from Roma Craft Tobac. It would be heresy not to.
Would I smoke this cigar again? For the love of all that is sacred, YES!
If, like me, you’re a fan of rich, flavour bomb cigars like Padron, you’ll love this blend. Boutique cigars are boutique for a reason. This is your chance to find out why.
