Joya de Nicaragua History & Story

“It’s been a turbulent yet rewarding journey. We pioneered an industry, rebuilt a gunned and burned-down factory, survived a decade of the embargo, and much more…”

How it all started…

1968

We Ignited Nicaragua

If Nicaragua had poster boys for pioneers in its tobacco industry, Simón Camacho and Juan Francisco Bermejo would be first among them. The pair fled their native Cuba like so many others of their time. They sought opportunities in other lands. They had access to fields rich with deep, volcanic soil in Estelí, Condega and Jalapa. On arrival, they agreed to pay workers to help them grow and harvest. And they found facilities in Central Estelí where they could process the tobacco. These were the first days of the Nicaragua Cigar Company.

1970 The Oficial Cigar Of The White House

Nicaraguan cigars became recognized as a superior alternative to Cuban cigars after the embargo. Somoza, a fellow classmate of Richard Nixon visited the White House. As a polite statesman, Nixon offered Somoza a box of cigars to choose from. As the dictator reached to select one, he paused, his hand hovered over the box. He enjoyed seeing that the cigars fit perfect into the full box from the Nicaraguan Cigar Company.

Somoza Debayle was keen to cash in on the opportunities tobacco provided in Nicaragua. He owned farms in Estelí and Jalapa which were already producing viable crops. Now came his chance to own a factory.

2023 To The Next 50 Years

55 years ago, we pioneered an industry by crafting the first cigars to come out of Nicaragua.  Today, JDN is the most international brand in Nicaragua. A presence in over 60 markets, and growing.

“We are thriving, like never before, thanks to our people and the discerning palates of cigar enthusiasts everywhere. For us, quality is not an obligation, it is our highest commitment. Humbled and proud of 55 years of perseverance and success. But more so inspired by all the memories we have created with our cigar friends around the world.”

Proud roots

The start, 1968. Joya de Nicaragua started as the very first premium handmade cigar manufacturer in Nicaragua. A factory located in the city of Estelí. Today, the tobacco capital of the world. Fábrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua, S.A is a 100% Nicaraguan-owned and operated company. They develop, manufacture and market worldwide renowned cigar brands.

From seed to smoke

To make great cigars, you need great tobacco.

By the time a Joya de Nicaragua Cigar reaches you, it will have passed through more than 300 pairs of hands. All the tobacco used to make it will be at least four years old. This is how Joya de Nicaragua makes great tobacco, and cigars ‘For Those In The Know’.

Ageing Room

The Escaparates, or Aging Room, is another milestone in the cigar’s life. Here, the tobacco will rest after the rigours of farm and factory activity. It allows the blends to mellow and mingle and the tobacco leaves to marry. This can take from 90 days to several years, depending on the strength and blending of the cigars. Joya de Nicaragua considers the Escaparates to be one of the most crucial stages of cigar making.

Once sorted by colour, the packers pack the cigars in a box from dark to light, left to right. Each cigar gets a ring, fed into protective cellophane wrappers and placed in the box. Sealed with a Joya de Nicaragua origin sticker. It is a guarantee of their Nicaraguan authenticity. Joya de Nicaragua cigars then travel by land, air and sea to the various markets worldwide.
